Somatic Configurations: Lilia's Interactive Exhibit
Somatic Configurations is an interactive exhibit by Lilia that invites viewers into the heart of her creative world. A selection of her iconic abstract works are displayed on illuminated cube sculptures of varying sizes, transforming the space into a vibrant, ever-shifting installation. Viewers are encouraged to direct their own perception of Lilia’s art by changing the color of the light that radiates from each cube. This allows the viewer to explore color and light as a tool for physical and emotional reflection. The audience can shift the mood and meaning of the work with the changing lightwaves—revealing feelings of warmth, calm, energy, or unease. This simple act becomes deeply introspective, prompting the viewer to ask: How does this color make me feel? Do I feel more grounded in my body, more anxious, more alive? As the colors shift, so too does the sensory landscape—transferring energy from eyes to touch, inviting presence in both body and mind.
Through their interactions, the audience engages in a form of sensory regulation—echoing the calming, grounding techniques Lilia employs while creating her digital artwork using vision-tracking software. For Lilia, light is not only an artistic medium but a personal regulator. The glow of color helps calm her nervous system, creating the conditions she needs to make her art. As she explores new palettes, the emotional tone of her work transforms—each hue shaping the art just as much as the viewer’s experience of it. Somatic Configurations becomes not just a meditative experience, but a collaborative act of self-discovery and art creation, blurring the line between artist and audience.
There will be an opening reception on Thursday, April 24th from 7-9 pm at the Stevenson Blanche Gallery at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts)
24700 McBean Pkwy, Valencia, CA 91355.
